Samburu national reserve is in the northern part of the rift valley 6 hrs drive from the capital Nairobi. The part is part of a broad ecosystem encompassing buffalo springs, Samburu national reserve, shaba national reserve and a number of private conservancies.
The parks is well for its large elephant population. Despite the low visitor uptake Samburu National reserve offer some of the best game view in the country with an impressive faunal display. Importantly, Samburu national reserve is set at the point where the savannah plains transition to a more arid habitat leading to a very unique set of fauna and avian varieties.
The beautiful reticulated giraffes, grevy’s zebra, Beisa oryx and gerenuk are some of the most prevalent wildlife species you can easily spot on a normal game drive. For the big cats, Samburu offers one of the best opportunities to sight leopards which a rare and elusive cat in other Kenya wilderness. The park also boosts a large population of birds adapted to desert like habitat. You are likely to encounter one the large Somali ostrich as you proceed with your day activities. Samburu is the only place in Kenya where you can sight certain Abyssinian bird varieties.
When is the best time for a 3 days Samburu national reserve safari?
Samburu is an all year round destination. The park like most parts of northern region receives low rainfall and experiences prolonged drought. However, the January and February offer optimal game view as most grazing spots are dried up leaving the wildlife clustering along River Ewaso Ng’iro which has all year round rush savannah. Over this period some mt Kenya elephants migrate from Mt Kenya via the Ngare ndare corridor into Samburu region.
Program
Day 1: Nairobi- Samburu
Early morning our driver pick you The Airport or your hotel in Nairobi. You depart for Samburu by 0700 hrs circumventing the scenic mount Kenya which is one of the highest peak in Africa. Along the way you will enjoy the of flora and beautiful snow peaks as well as the refreshing crossover of the equator to the northern hemisphere. You will arrive at 1300 hrs approximately where you check in take lunch as you head for an afternoon game drives. The climax will be at the sunset view of the wildlife feeding out in the field.
Day 2: Samburu Excursion/ Samburu village/ walking safari
Morning game drives begin at 0700 hrs. These are the best hours to check wildlife in the flora rich riparian banks of River Ewaso Ng’iro which acts as a natural border between Samburu National reserve and Buffalo springs. Here elephants are common sights. Over the harsh dry season, the river dries up to a panoramic floral cover that is the last remaining grazing spot for wildlife in the 3 parks making it easier to experience game view offered in this wilderness. Morning game drives proceed until lunch hour when you return to your camp for lunch( picnic lunch option available). In the afternoon you will proceed with your normal day drives with an allowance to visit a samburu village, go for a guided bush walk, camel riding or check into one of the other two Samburu parks coming at an extra cost.
Day 3: Samburu – Nairobi
You will go for an early morning game drive followed by checkout at around 0900 hrs. At 1000 hrs for evening drop off at the point of pick up. You will have lunch at a restaurant on your way to Nairobi.
